Gene Saunders Court Dedication
Friday, February 7, 2020
For around a quarter of a century, Gene Saunders has been an iconic and beloved employee in the Stewartsville C2 School District, and we are excited to have the opportunity to show him our sincere gratitude. Gene, better known within "The Nest" as Super Gene, has been a lifelong resident of Stewartsville. He has made a lasting impact on our school as a student, student-athlete, parent, community member, and employee. Gene graduated in 1982 as a four-year Varsity Basketball Letterman and Valedictorian of his senior class. He received All-Conference Basketball Honors for his exceptional play in 1980, 1981 & 1982. Gene was also named to the All-District Basketball Team in 1981 & 1982 and was a U.S. Basketball Award Winner in 1981. Gene was the 1982 Courtwarming King and held the all-time points leader record at SHS with 1,245 points scored until 1991. From 1996-2008, Gene served as the president of the Stewartsville Ball Association and devoted countless hours coaching, scheduling, umpiring, and preparing the ball field for numerous softball and baseball games. Gene also served the Stewartsville community from 1993-2003 as the maintenance director and bookkeeper for the Stewartsville Senior Housing Board. Gene began his distinguished career in the Stewartsville C2 School District in July 1996 and throughout the years, has worn many hats. His dedication to our school has been unwavering. Super Gene has served as a coach, bus driver, maintenance director, technology coordinator, master carpenter, heating and cooling expert, groundskeeper, plumber, electrician, DJ, turf manager, master mechanic, statistician, and the list goes on and on. However, the most appreciated role Gene has had through his years as a Cardinal is that of a friend. Gene is a living example of all we discuss as being part of "The Cardinal Way." Gene has announced his intention to retire at the end of June 2020, and we wish him a happy and long retirement.
